Barbados Barbados is a vibrant Caribbean island with natural beauty and gracious hospitality. It has one of the highest standards of living and literacy rates in the world, and a major tourist destination. The weather is always sunny and warm with temperatures ranging from the high 70’s to the low 90’s. These kinds of qualities are reasons that a friend of mine is planning to take a trip there, and she invited me to go along with her tour. Thus, Barbados has been responsive to political-economic trends that have made the country a popular tourism attraction. The culture of Barbados is a blend of West African and British cultures. English is the official language of the nation, reflecting centuries of British influence. However the Bajan dialect, a uniquely English-West African pidgin, is spoken throughout the island. The country’s love of sports like cricket and polo continue to be essential parts of Barbados’ culture. Both sports were inherited from Britain. They are the most popular sports on the island, and their teams have won numerous regional and international titles. Other sports include surfing, sailing, and other marine pastimes. The country’s architecture also has a British influence, with a Barbadian flair. Many historic buildings still stand such as the Jacobean, Georgian, and Vict orian styles.
